A neurological examination is an essential component of a comprehensive physical examination. A careful neurological evaluation can help a physical therapist begin to localize the problem, and to determine impairments and their possible causes, functional loss, and focus of treatment. The examination is an ongoing process and continues throughout the course of treatment. After neurologic examination, physical therapists can help a patient regain some to most of the functions they lost because of an injury, enabling the patient to learn to live independently again.
